SWEET SOUNDS follows the life story of Englishman, John Newton (1725 – 1807): British naval seaman, slave, slave ship captain, minister, author, writer of Amazing Grace, counsellor to William Wilberforce, who did all he could for the abolition of the slave trade he had earlier supported.
Writing under the pen-name Belinda Mackay, wrote the books, ‘China’s Dancer’ and ‘Seeing it God’s Way’. The first concerns her time teaching English in a college in China and the second is about humanitarians. Newton’s life story has fascinated readers for 300 years: his debauchery as a young man to his coming to faith during a fierce storm at sea. But he later accepted command of slave ships! (In a cruel era, European society considered slave trading a ‘genteel occupation’.) Later in life he realised such cruelty must not be allowed to flourish as it had done so for hundreds of years and he worked for its abolition. When most sailors were scared to give evidence, Newton wrote a book on the issue and gave evidence to the Privy Council. Through the persistence of his friend, William Wilberforce, the Br slave trade was finally abolished in 1807 & slavery in 1833. But, there are 50 million slaves in the world today. The film will bring the issue of slavery (human trafficking) to the public’s attention. More than just wanting to make a film, I want this brutal, growing trade to be abolished.
I simplified the screenplay (without losing historical facts) with a view to shooting the Sierra Leone and British West Indies scenes in Australia. We have long deserted beaches, a small but multinational population, tall ships and historic buildings.

Rich Nagle’s journey through storytelling began at a young age, first crafting tales to explain mishaps, like breaking his mom’s favorite vase, and later through writing lyrics and collaborating with band members during his high school years. His passion for storytelling extended into music, where he wrote and recorded numerous songs, a form of expression that remains with him today.
Theatre became another key avenue for Rich’s creativity. He acted in high school, continued performing in college, and later joined local community theatre. Notably, he played the Duke of Norfolk in “A Man for All Seasons” and the ominous Jack Manningham in “GASLIGHT.” His foray into directing came with “Come Blow Your Horn,” marking his directorial debut. During college, Rich had the privilege of studying under
Sydney H. Spayde, a respected figure in theatre as an author, director, and educator at the University of Iowa.
As his love for theatre grew, writing plays became a natural extension of his storytelling passion. He ventured into screenwriting, writing several screenplays and stage plays.
Among them are “Proclamation 2526,” a historical play, “Alternate Ending,” a dramedy, and “Jump or Fall”, a one act stage and radio play. Through these projects, Rich continues to channel his rich imagination and storytelling expertise into various artistic forms.
